The "Unpaid Toll" Text Scam
The Problem: You get a text saying you have an unpaid toll and need to “settle immediately” or face late fees, license suspension, or worse. It includes a link that looks like it goes to a real toll agency (E-ZPass, SunPass, etc.), but actually leads to a fake site built to steal your card number. These messages have gotten a lot more polished and harder to spot at a glance.
The Solution: Don’t tap the link. Toll agencies don’t threaten immediate suspension over text, and legitimate unpaid tolls show up as mail or in your account, not urgent texts. If you’re not sure, go directly to your toll agency’s official app or website (type the address in yourself, don’t use the link) to check your balance. You can also forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it, then delete it.
