AI Voice Cloning "Family Emergency" Calls
The Problem: You get a call (or voicemail) and it sounds exactly like your child, grandchild, or another family member. They say they’ve been in an accident, arrested, or are stranded, and need money sent right away — usually by wire transfer, gift cards, or an app like Venmo or Zelle. In reality, it’s a scammer who cloned that person’s voice using just a few seconds of audio pulled from social media or old videos. It’s convincing enough that even close family members have been fooled.
The Solution: Slow down — real emergencies can survive a two-minute phone call to check. Hang up and call the family member back directly at their known number, or text another relative to verify. Agree on a family “safe word” ahead of time that a scammer wouldn’t know. Be extra suspicious of anyone pressuring you to act immediately or pay in gift cards or crypto — that’s a scam red flag no matter who they claim to be.
